Luke Donald's Diary

Having a couple of successful weeks, in the US PGA Championship, where I finished third, and the World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational, meant a lot to me. Not only did it secure my place in the Ryder Cup, it gave me a lot of confidence just at the right point in the season, with the K Club coming up.
"Tiger played very solidly. That's why he's the number one player in the world."

I knew I could play on a big stage like that and it set up the rest of my year nicely. I got into the World Matchplay Championship because of it and that will be good preparation for the Ryder Cup. So I'm very excited to have played really well for the last couple of weeks. Playing with Tiger in the final round at Medinah was a great experience. In fact it was a tough day for me. I felt I played a lot better than my score and didn't really get that one putt I needed to get me going, give me that spark. I hit a lot of good solid shots, a lot of good drives, good irons, but struggled a bit on the greens.

Tiger played very solidly. That's why he's the number one player in the world. He was fun to watch and I'll learn from that and I know I'll be a better player the next time I'm in that situation. Tiger's strength of mind is something else. He's said himself, when he is really on he can make things happen. He definitely did that on those first nine holes, made some big putts - holed a couple of 40-footers - and when he was in trouble he was able to save par. He's got that will to get the ball into the hole somehow and I've got to learn to do that. Tiger's got a head start on me, though. Since he was about two years old he's been brought up to try and be the best player ever to play this game. I've only really been thinking about that for the last year or so! I feel like I'm improving, though. It's nice to get into situations like the US PGA Championship and see what you're made of.

Akron had an entirely different feel. I was under a lot of pressure at the PGA and Akron almost felt like a lazy week not as much of a crowd watching me and the atmosphere didn't really pick up nearly as much. It was a relaxing week. It was also different to the PGA as far as my game went. Whereas I hit the ball really well tee-to-green at Medinah at Akron I didn't hit the ball quite so well but my short-game was very sharp. I got up and down a lot and putted well.

I haven't changed much with my equipment. When things are going well, you don't, and I'm not a great one for change anyway. I feel very comfortable with the equipment I've got and, apart from new grips just before the PGA, which were getting a bit worn out, I've kept everything the same. I feel very comfortable when I'm playing my Mizuno clubs and I look forward to using them for a good while. I've signed a new contract to play Mizuno for another three years after this one and I'm very excited about that.
