Luke Donald's Ryder Cup Diary

To be part of such a wonderful occasion is going to live in the memory. I was very happy to get a 100 per cent record. Playing against 12 of the best US players, you know it's going to be tough. I would have loved to have played a couple more matches. But to win three out of three was all I could wish for.

Getting points with Sergio against the world's top two players in Tiger and Phil was a great result. From a personal standpoint, I was disappointed to be left out of the first morning but it was a tough decision Woosie had. He had 12 players playing pretty well and to leave out four is tough. But I think when you miss the morning, there's a lot more pressure on the individual shots in the foursomes. I eventually found some rhythm and got into a routine, started driving well. Teeing off on the odd number tees, you do a lot of driving and a lot of putting, so it's hard to get into a rhythm.

Any time you can beat Tiger you've got to be delighted. And Jim Furyk number one in the world and number three. As Tiger says, if he loses a point, he feels like he loses two. He's losing a point his team expects and we're getting one for ours.

The course was very, very wet. We had to play lifting and placing all week, which was unfortunate, but I was happy with my game. As a team, though, we all played extremely well. The course seemed to suit all of us. But then when you're playing well, the course always suits you. I putted nicely. Playing the two foursomes with Sergio, as I teed off on the odds, I was hitting a lot of putts, and I was very happy with my putting. I holed a lot of good putts, quite a few 20-30-footers, which is very key in match play. That proved the difference in our matches.

I had my own chant at the Ryder Cup... Luuuuke! I first heard it in 2002 at Bethpage Black. Some of the New Yorkers were chanting 'Luuuke'. Something to do with Star Wars and Luke Sky-Walker, I guess. It's sort of carried on from there. At the PGA this year there were a lot of Luke chants and it obviously came across the Pond to Ireland. It's kind of nice to have my own chant. It's a little bit strange because when some people hear it they think they're hearing booing!

It wasn't really 12 against 12 at the K Club, it was 12 plus the 40,000 in the crowd against the 12 US guys. The spectators were magnificent. It's always an advantage being at home. The energy the crowd bring to the home team is amazing. To have that support - the emotions, the loudness and the atmosphere - on the first tee was just unbelievable. It's hard to put into words. It's something I'll remember for a long, long time.

And the singles. Getting the 14th point to make sure we kept the Ryder Cup was obviously special. You could almost say when my putt went in, that was the moment we won it because Henrik couldn't lose his match. But whether I got the 14th or 15th point it was just an amazing experience, an amazing team experience the whole week. On the final day, it made it a lot easier on everyone, seeing so much blue on the board because we knew someone was going to get there. It was only a matter of time.

The celebrations were good. I had a good time. I wasn't up too late, got to bed around 3am! We had some fun. We even went over to the US camp and had a few drinks with them, had a few laughs. It was nice, a really good spirit between the two teams. I didn't get too out of control and I didn't feel too bad the next day. We definitely had a lot of fun. Then it was great to move up to number eight in the world rankings straight after such a fantastic week. The highest I've been. I sent Sergio a text about five seconds after I found out I'd gone above him!
