6ft 6 Woody’s winning irons are probably just 3/4″ longer than yours
Mizuno custom build iron service available throughout Europe
At 6ft 6 inches tall Chris Wood is not just the latest winner of the European Tour’s flagship event – he’s the tallest by some distance.
Though Woody is a fair bit taller than the average UK male (5ft 10), his Mizuno irons are just 3/4 inch longer than standard. Chris Wood’s irons are built on the Japanese manufacturers famous European Tour workshop – the same set up that tended to 6 time major winner Nick Faldo.
Chris Wood’s irons are the boron infused MP-25’s (3 and 4), MP-5 channel backs (5-PW) and MP-T5 wedges (52/56/60). All built to 3/4 inch longer than standard with Rifle Flighted 7.0 steel shafts – with the lie angles bent to 3 degrees up from standard.
Alex Thorne Tour Operations manager said, “Everyone thinks that Woody’s irons will be longer than they really are – but height alone isn’t the critical factor. It all comes down to posture at address – arm length is important too. Also the lie angle being more upright puts Chris in a comfortable position, without too many inches added to the shaft – making them too heavy to swing.”
“The balance of weight is important too. Mizuno’s forging factory in Hiroshima Japan produces two different weight heads for every single loft on every model – an A and B weight. We use the lighter headweight for the longer irons like Woody’s to keep them playable.”
“That’s not a service just available to our tour players – our assembly lines build exactly the same way for club golfers too.”
